Rowing Machine Review

Updated: August 3, 2023

The ProForm Pro 750R is the low-tech option from the brand’s lineup, but make no mistake, just because it doesn’t come with a touchscreen doesn’t mean it is not geared up for smart training with iFIT. The ProForm Pro 750R can be paired via Bluetooth with a smart device you already own to access iFIT’s content library. Prefer to train on your own? The simplistic console let’s you get right to your workout with an easy-to-navigate interface.

Who The ProForm Pro 750R Rower Is Best For:

  • Beginners: The ProForm Pro 750R’s budget-friendly price and variety of training options make it a great place to start for beginners.
  • Athletes with Small Spaces: The folding SpaceSaver design of the 750R fits in spaces too small for other cardio machines. It is also safer than upright storage.
  • Uncommitted Subscribers: iFIT offers a 30-day free trial to new members. If you want to try the platform but aren’t sure if you will stick around, the 750R might be the right rower for you.

Rowing Machine Review Of The ProForm Pro 750R

Build Quality

Frame

The ProForm Pro 750R Rower has a steel frame. The newest model has been updated from a red and black color scheme to a more neutral black and gray design. The 750R has two legs on either end for arched stabilizers. The 750R can support a user weight of up to 250 lbs. Though the rower is stable, some of its other design features may make it uncomfortable for larger users. I recommend the 750R for users under 6’5”. Petite users will be most comfortable.

Flywheel

The ProForm Pro 750R has an inertia-enhanced flywheel. This usually means that the flywheel is heavier, but I was unable to verify its weight.

Handle and Strap

The 750R has the same round padded handle as the R10. I am a fan of this handle, because it feels comfortable to grip. It doesn’t have any edges to cut into my fingers and it spins freely to keep the wrists in a comfortable position throughout the entire stroke. The handle is large enough for a variety of user hand sizes.

The handle is connected to a nylon strap. This strap measures 90 inches, giving you plenty of length to row fully. The 750R’s strap is much quieter than the chain alternative.

Rail and Seat

The ProForm Pro 750R has a steel monorail. Though we have not measured this exact rower, we know the monorail on the R10, a comparable machine from ProForm, is about 39 inches. Based on this length and buyer reviews, we do not recommend the 750R for taller users. Its folding design may also shorten the forward range of the rower seat. I had a problem with loudly colliding with the front of the monorail, and I think the same problem would happen on the 750R. Nevertheless, the rower’s monorail length is likely suitable for most athletes.

ProForm rower seats are very soft, but they tend to be a little small. The 750R seems to fit into this category, as well. It may be too small for larger users, but it should not require any extra padding to be soft enough. We estimate the size to be 9 ½” x 11 ½”.

Foot Stretchers and Footboards

The foot stretchers on the 750R have Velcro straps for keeping your feet in place. We estimate the footboards to be about 13” x 4”. Most users should be able to make good contact with the footboards for the drive.

Storage

The ProForm Pro 750R is built on a SpaceSaver folding frame. This allows the monorail to fold down from the rest of the rower. It can be done in a pinch by one user. Simply lift the rower using the center handle, and the rower collapses down. The rower can also be wheeled around on its two front wheels. The 750R rowing machine is compact and portable, making it an excellent cardio machine for an exerciser with a small space.

Resistance

The twenty-four magnetic resistance levels are silent. The only noise the 750R should create is the sound of the seat gliding over the monorail and any content being played. The strap and flywheel noise are very minimal.

The magnetic resistance is most suited to beginners and intermediate rowers. The 750R is best for endurance efforts. Strong athletes training for power will likely find the 750R too easy. I have not tested the 750R’s resistance for myself, but my experience with the ProForm Pro R10 and its sister brand, NordicTrack’s rowers, indicate that the resistance may have issues maintaining throughout the stroke. Typically, I find that the resistance tapers off during the finish because there is slack in the strap. Hopefully, this issue can be resolved in updates to ProForm’s rowers.

Features & Accessories

The ProForm Pro 750R has a more simplistic design than other iFIT-enabled rowers. It uses a low-tech console, keeping the price affordable and the interface easy to navigate. The R750R does not have a touchscreen display, but it can be paired with a smart device you already own to access training content from iFIT. It’s the perfect setup for anyone unsure if subscription content is right for them.

Console Overview

The 750R has a high contrast 5” LCD window for viewing your training stats. It sits at the top of the console. The row of buttons beneath the screen are the controls for scrolling through the onscreen metrics. The volume buttons are also found here.

The bottom row of buttons is the resistance controls. For athletes training manually, these buttons will be convenient for jumping from one level to another. There are large plus and minus buttons outlined in red for changing the resistance level more precisely, as not every number in the 1 to 24 range is represented.

Device Holder

The ProForm Pro 750R has a device rack for storing a phone or tablet. Your personal device can replace the lack of a built-in screen, allowing you to train along with iFIT content. Any device placed on the tablet rack would overlap some or all of the buttons. This is not a problem when you are training with iFIT as your metrics and resistance can be viewed and controlled from the screen.

Speakers

The speakers are front-facing. I cannot say for sure what their strength is, but I am accustomed to iFIT devices having sufficiently strong audio features. The R10’s speakers were powerful, so I expect the same from the 750R. There is also an Aux port if you wish to listen to your own music without a Bluetooth connection.

Bluetooth

The 750R is Bluetooth. When connected with a smart device using iFIT, the exerciser can hear the training content and have their resistance levels automatically adjusted by the app to keep up with the trainer’s cues. This training capability takes the 750R from a low-tech to a high-tech rower.

Performance

The ProForm Pro 750R is a good rower for a beginner to the sport. The design is easier for inflexible users to use, due to the shortened front of the monorail and the close proximity of the handle rack and console. The seat is also very soft, so you can escape any soreness firmer seats may cause. The handles are also very comfortable and suited to a variety of grips.

The magnetic resistance is not quite as limitless as air or water resistance. Thus, the 750R is more suited to beginners or endurance rowing. ProForm’s magnetic resistance is plenty challenging for me, but I prefer longer efforts to more powerful efforts.

Subscription & Content Options

The 750R has versatile training. It is compatible with iFIT, but it does not require a subscription if you prefer to train another way. The console lets exercisers train manually, giving them full control over their workouts while displaying their live metrics. However, if you want a more guided training experience, the 750R can help you with that, too.

With an active iFIT subscription (or during your 30-day free trial), the 750R can be paired with a smartphone or tablet with iFIT downloaded. Your device will act just like a built-in screen. The Bluetooth connection allows iFIT content to play through the speakers and automatically change the resistance during a workout.

iFIT has studio and on-the-water classes for rowing. It also has thousands of classes for other cardio equipment, strength training, and yoga. With one membership, you gain access to all of the content. iFIT may effectively replace a gym membership for some users. Get the best of your workout on the 750R with iFIT, and then add some cross-training into the mix.

Bottom Line Review of the ProForm Pro 750R Rower

The ProForm Pro 750R Rower is a great entry point to rowing. Athletes have the option of training with or without subscription content from iFIT. Though the console does not have a touchscreen, it can pair with a smart device for smart training. The 750R folds in half for compact storage when not in use. It is also very quiet, making it great for apartment living. The 750R is budget-friendly and versatile.
