Treadmill Review

The Gold’s Gym 420 treadmill is a budget treadmill which is really only up to walkers and no other regular kind of treadmill users. While the 420 has some standard features which line up to other treadmills in its price range, the short warranty and other restrictive features has Treadmill Reviews saying this treadmill may not be the one for your money.

Price

The 420 treadmill is priced at $529.

The 420 Is Built For Users who:

  • Will mostly use it for walking - While the 420 can reach up to 10 miles per hour, a runner will wear the 420 down with regular use. This treadmill will last better under the use of a walker who only occasionally jogs.
  • Need an affordable treadmill - Budget considerations are important when treadmill shopping. Because of this, the 420 appeals as it is a very affordable budget treadmill.
  • Prefer simple treadmill consoles - The console on the 420 has two simple rows for the speed and incline buttons with a small handful of other clearly labeled buttons which will allow you to navigate this treadmill’s operating system easily.

Why The 420 earned 2.2 stars

Since the 420 falls into the price category of treadmills between $500 - $700, we judge it by the standard set there. It unfortunately did not become one of our best treadmills between $500 - $700.

  • Restrictive treadmill belt - The 420 treadmill belt only measures 18” in width by 50” in length. That can become cramped quickly when you try to regularly use the 420.
  • Average speed and incline - For its price range, the 420 has an average max speed of 10 MPH and incline range of 0-10%. While it’s not the best, it is what we expect from a treadmill in this price range.
  • Limited warranty period - It is always concerning when manufacturers don’t want to back up their products with decent warranties. The frame and motor only have 5-year warranties, and there is only a 90-day warranty on the parts and labor. This is distinctly shorter than we like to see.

Main Specs - 5/10

Specs “Quick Review”:
  • Motor Size: 2.5 HP
  • Running Area: 18” W x 50” L
  • Weight Capacity: 300 lbs
  • Folding: Yes
  • Footprint In Use (W, L, H): 33” x 70” x 53”
  • Incline Range: 0-10%
  • Max Speed: 10 MPH
  • Treadmill Best For: Walkers
  • Electrical Requirements: 120 volts

Motor Size - The motor in this treadmill is a 2.5 HP. As this is not a CHP measurement, we aren’t sure it can sustain a fast pace as HP only measure the motor’s peak power and not its continuous power.

Running Area - The running area is a slightly narrow 18” wide by 50” length. This may be a problem if you have a larger frame or a long stride, as there is the potential of stepping on the side rails or overstriding the treadmill belt.

Weight Capacity - Rated to carry a user weighing up to 300lbs, we aren’t sure the 420 is up to that capacity. If you are between 250-300 lbs, you may want to look at a sturdier treadmill.

Folding  - Equipped with the patented SpaceSaver design, you can fold up the 420 when you don’t need it. It has a metal pin with a spring release to secure the deck when folded.

Space / Footprint -  Measuring 33” wide, 70” long, and 53” high, the 420 is a compact treadmill which will fit nicely into most tight living quarters.

Max Speed - The treadmill’s max speed is 10 miles per hour. However, we don’t recommend you often use the higher speeds on the 420, as this treadmill was not really built for runners.

Incline - This treadmill has an incline range of 0-10% so even while walking you can pack in an effective workout.

420 Review: Build Quality

  • Warranties - 5-year frame & motor, 90 days for parts & labor
  • Belt - 1-ply
  • Cushioning - AirStride™ Plus
  • Customer Support - Live chat, phone, email
  • Return Policy - 30-day trial period

For a treadmill between $500-$700, the 420 has a rather short warranty period. Because of the short duration, we aren’t sure how long the 420 is supposed to last, especially if you plan to regularly use the 420 to workout.

There is a 10% restocking fee for any returned 420 treadmills which are authorized to be sent back within the 30-day trial period. However, if the treadmill is damaged or defective, you can receive a full refund or exchange.

Bottom Line Review Of The Gold’s Gym 420 Treadmill

The Gold’s Gym 420 treadmill rides more on the name of Gold’s Gym than its own merits and isn’t a treadmill that Treadmill Reviews feels comfortable recommending. Considering the curtailed features to the short warranty period, even if all you want this treadmill for is for walking, you are better off spending your money for an equally-priced treadmill elsewhere.
